Football Results from the Weekend

Another round of Premier League games has taken place with drama at the top and bottom of the table. The FA Cup semi-finals also took place, let’s have a look at the games and final football results from the weekend:

Premier League

Arsenal 3 – 3 Southampton

A third draw in a row for Arsenal sees Manchester City just 5 points behind with 2 games in hand, meaning if City win both their games in hand they will go top of the Premier League. Arsenal were 1 goal down after just a minute and even further behind after 14 when ex gunner, Theo Walcott but his team 2 goals ahead. Martinelli got a goal back for Arsenal before Caleta-Car made it 3-1 to Southampton in the 66th minute. Late goals from Odegaard (88′) and Saka (90′) would recue a point, but will it be enough? Arsenal travel to The Etihad on Wednesday 26th April which could end up being a title decider!

Fulham 2 – 1 Leeds United

Fulham took all 3 points against Leeds with all the goals coming in the second half. Harry Wilson (58′) and Andreas Pereira (72′) was enough to send Fulham up to 9th in the table. Leeds got a goal back through a Joao Palhinha own goal in the 79th minute, but it would not be enough to spark a comeback for Leeds who find themselves in 16th position, just 1 point above relegation.

Brentford 1 – 1 Aston Villa

A 65th minute goal from Ivan Toney and a late equaliser from Douglas Luiz (87′) would mean a share of the points for the two teams. Brentford are settled in 10th while Villa are still pushing for a spot in Europe, finding themselves in 6th position just 5 points off top 4, can they do it?

Crystal Palace 0 – 0 Everton

Crystal Palace edged closer to Premier League survival after a goalless draw to struggling Everton who fell into 18th place on goal difference, despite earning a point. Mason Holgate was sent off in the 80th minute, but Everton were able to hold out with 10-men. The Toffees will face Leicester on Monday 1st May which could give a better indication of who is in danger of the drop.

Leicester City 2 – 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Leicester earned a massive 3 points in their bid for survival. It didn’t start too well for The Foxes though, after Matheus Cunha scored in the 13th minute. Leicester fought back to take the victory with goals from Iheanacho (37′) and Castagne (75′). Leicester moved up to 17th place and out of the relegation zone on goal difference. They face Leeds on Tuesday 25th April, which could turn out to be an all or nothing fixture.

Liverpool 3 – 2 Nottingham Forest

Liverpool carried on their winning ways with two goals from Diogo Jota in the 47th and 55th minute. It wasn’t all plain sailing as Forest were able to fight back to 1-1 and 2-2 with goals scored by ex-red Neco Williams (51′) and Gibbs-White (67′). Mo Salah sealed the winner in the 70th minute which would be too much for Forest to overcome. They move down to 19th position on 27 points, while Liverpool are now 9 points off the top 4 in 7th position.

Bournemouth 0 – 4 West Ham United

West Ham United are moving closer to safety in 13th position as they put 4 past 15th place Bournemouth. Michael Antonio put The Hammers ahead after just 5 minutes with the floodgates opening soon after. Goals from Lucas Paqueta (12′), Declan Rice (43′) and Pablo Fornals (72′) would earn West Ham all 3 points and take them 6 points ahead of the relegation zone.

Newcastle United 6 – 1 Tottenham Hotspur

Newcastle were 5-0 up after just 21 minutes against a Spurs side that are still fighting to play Champions League football next season. Murphy (2′, 9′) Willock (6′) Isak (19′, 21′) and Wilson (67′) earned The Magpies the 3 points, meaning they are 6 points ahead of top 4 chasing Spurs. Harry Kane grabbed a goal in the 49th minute but Tottenham will struggle to be in the top 4 come the end of the campaign.

FA Cup

Manchester City 3 – 0 Sheffield United

Manchester City earned their place in the FA Cup Final with a hat-trick from Riyad Mahrez sealing a 3-0 victory. Sheffield United could have gone ahead early after Iliman Ndiaye saw his shot saved by City ‘keeper Stefan Ortega. The Citizen’s quality would prove too much however, as they booked a place at Wembley against Manchester United.

Brighton & Hove Albion 0 – 0 Manchester United (Manchester United win on penalties)

In a match that would finish goalless after extra time and the teams seemingly being inseparable on penalties, it would fall to the unfortunate Solly March to miss the target with his penalty. Victor Lindelof would send United to the FA Cup final with his classy penalty put into the top corner. United’s victory sets up a tie with local rivals Manchester City in the final.
