Weekend Football Results

The latest round of Premier League football took place this weekend with big results for teams at the top and bottom of the table. The first cup final of the season also kicked off on Sunday afternoon, seeing Chelsea and Liverpool battle it out for the Carabao Cup! Let’s take a look at all the results:

Carabao Cup Final: Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool (After Extra Time)

Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season with at least one trophy in his final year after beating Chelsea 1-0 in extra time at Wembley on Sunday. In a match that saw Liverpool field a much-depleted side, with players such as Alisson, Salah and Nunez missing through injury, many thought that Chelsea would have the perfect opportunity to win the Carabao Cup. Both teams thought they had scored in normal time after Jackson was ruled to be offside for Chelsea and Van Dijk’s header being wiped out due to Endo being in an offside position.

It would take until the 118th minute, deep into extra time for Virgil Van Dijk to break the deadlock with a header from a Tsimikas corner. Chelsea were unable to find a goal in the last minutes, meaning Liverpool are Carabao Cup Winners for 2024.

Aston Villa 4-2 Nottingham Forest

Aston Villa took another step towards qualifying for the Champions League next season with a 4-2 win over Nottingham Forest. Goals from Watkins, Bailey and two from Douglas Luiz saw Villa go 5 points clear of Spurs in 5th position.

Brighton 1-1 Everton

Relegation threatened Everton earned a point away at Brighton who had gone down to 10 men for the final 10 minutes. Everton took the lead through Branthwaite on the 73rd minute and were in with a fantastic chance of taking all 3 points when Gilmour was sent off for Brighton on the 81st minute. Their hopes were dashed in the 95th minute when Dunk was able to head home. Everton are just 1 point ahead of the relegation zone, with Luton having a game in hand.

Crystal Palace 3-0 Burnley

Yet another tough day for Burnley as they travelled to Selhurst Park to face a Palace team with a new manager. Oliver Glasner was able to earn 3 points on his managerial debut for The Eagles with goals from Richards, Ayew and Mateta. Crystal Palace have now moved 8 points clear of the drop zone with Burnley staying joint bottom on 13 points.

Manchester United 1-2 Fulham

Top-four chasing Manchester United lost ground on the rest of the pack at the weekend with a defeat at home to 12th-place Fulham. The game was all square up until the 65th minute when Bassey put Fulham ahead. Harry Maguire equalised late on and it looked like there would be a share of the points until the 97th minute when Iwobi found the net to give Fulham all three points. United are now 8 points behind Villa.

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester City

Manchester City kept pace with the top of the table at the weekend with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth. A single goal from Phil Foden was enough to take the points which saw City retake 2nd place to go 1 point behind Liverpool.

Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle United

Arsenal remained in 3rd spot with a fantastic win against Newcastle United. Goals from Botman (OG), Havertz, Saka and Kiwior saw The Gunners stay within 2 points of top of the table Liverpool and just 1 point behind 2nd place Manchester City.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 Sheffield United

An inform Wolves side welcomed bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United to Molineux on Sunday. It only took 1 goal from Wolves to seal all three points when Sarabia netted in the 30th minute. Wolves have moved up to 8th spot and are in the mix for European places.
