Wembley Stadium: Celebrating 100 years
Wembley Stadium is celebrating 100 years of incredible memories. It has played a huge part in many of England’s historic moments, not just in sport but in entertainment. Here are some of our picks for the greatest moments that took place at Wembley Stadium:
1948 Summer Olympics
After a 12 year break during World War 2, the 1948 Olympics was a welcome return to some normality for not only England, but the entire world. One of the key events from the Olympics involved a female Dutch athlete by the name of Fanny Blankers-Koen who won four gold medals. She played a big part in legitimising women’s sport for future competitions.
1966 World Cup Final
The only major tournament win that England has enjoyed, this legendary match will be forever engrained in many football fans across the country. The team, led by Bobby Moore beat West Germany 4-2 with a sublime hat-trick from Sir Geoff Hurst in extra-time to the sound of the now iconic commentary like “they think it’s all over, it is now!”
1985 Live Aid
Organised largely by Sir Bob Geldof, due to the horrific famine taking place in Ethiopia, the iconic event featured some of the world’s most famous bands and artists such as Paul McCartney, David Bowie and U2. However, the limelight was stolen by one band in particular. Queen, led by legendary front man Freddie Mercury, sang some of their greatest ever to an adoring crowd of 72,000.
2007 First FA Cup Final at the new Wembley
Chelsea v Manchester United was the very first FA Cup Final to take place at the brand new Wembley Stadium. Chelsea defeated United 1-0 under the arch, thanks to an extra-time goal from Didier Drogba.
