VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has been part of the Premier League since 2019, promising to make the game fairer and reduce human errors in officiating. However, controversies surrounding VAR decisions have put the technology under scrutiny. The latest being the Luis Diaz offside error in the Tottenham v Liverpool match, where a clear and obvious error was made, resulting in Liverpool losing the game. The lack of transparency and accountability in the decision-making process has raised concerns among players and fans alike. In this blog we will look into the history of VAR, its impact on modern football, and examine the Diaz incident. We also explore what the future holds for VAR in the Premier League and the need for continuous improvement.

A Brief History of VAR

Introduction of VAR in the Premier League was seen as a significant step towards modernising football. The system was designed to provide better decision-making support for referees. However, as its implementation took place, controversies in VAR decisions started to emerge. Throughout the past few seasons, there have been many incorrect decisions given which has led to a growth in frustration and anger from fans and managers alike.

Despite its faults, VAR is still an essential part of modern football. It has eliminated many of the human errors that were prevalent in the past. Quick and accurate decisions can now be made with the help of VAR, or that was the plan…

However, ex-players and managers have expressed concern over the implementation of VAR in the Premier League. The believe that VAR affects the flow of the game, leading to a lack of excitement and unpredictability. VAR’s impact on players and fans is also a cause for concern.

Luis Diaz Offside Error

The specific incident that cause the recent scrutiny over VAR occurred in the 34th minute of the Tottenham v Liverpool match. Luis Diaz was played through on goal by Mohamed Salah and scored, but the goal was not awarded due to an offside call by the linesman. Replays showed that Diaz was clearly onside, but after a VAR check, the decision stood and Liverpool were not given the goal.

The audio from the VAR referees has since been released and it would seem that there was some confusion as to what the on field decision had been, as well as the people involved, not stating clearly what the decision had been or how to rectify the situation after being made aware.

Jurgen Klopp has already stated that he thinks a replay would be the fairest way of dealing with the fallout and ex players such as Alan Shearer have called the audio clip ‘chaotic’. While it is extremely unlikely that a replay will take place, it is clear that something needs to be done to stop this from happening again.

The Future of VAR

Many have speculated that VAR needs to be completely automated to take out any human errors that may occur. The Champions League and Women’s World Cup used a fully automatic offside technology that worked perfectly. Others believe there should be more transparency with the way in which decisions are made, potentially have the audio of the referees and VAR public or even live during a game. Whatever the changes that come about from this latest incident, it is obvious that the growing concerns surrounding VAR must be addressed and serious changes made to the way in which decisions are made.

VAR has been a mixed bag in the Premier League, with some praising it for reducing human error and providing accurate decisions. However, ex-players and managers have been quick to point out the negative impact of VAR on the game, especially in terms of disrupting the flow and affecting the emotions of fans and players. The controversial offside decision in the Tottenham v Liverpool match, resulting in the disallowed goal for Luis Diaz has further intensified the scrutiny on VAR. VAR has its strengths and weaknesses but it is ultimately up to the PGMOL, who govern VAR and referees in the UK, to decide how best to deal with the most recent incident.
