As the season drew to a close, the Championship showcased its unpredictability and intensity, leaving us with two finalists who have triumphed over numerous challenges to reach this climactic showdown.
In this blog post, we will look at the history of Luton and Coventry City and how each team made it to the final at Wembley.
The History of Luton Town and Coventry City
Luton Town FC
Luton Town FC, also known as “The Hatters”, has a rich history that dates back over a century. Founded in 1885, the club has experienced its fair share of ups and downs. Luton enjoyed success in the late 80s and early 90s, reaching the peak of their achievements under the manager at the time, David Pleat. The club secured promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history in the 81/82 season, a remarkable accomplishment that saw them compete against the giants of English football. However, financial difficulties and struggles on the pitch saw Luton face a turbulent time during the late 90s and early 00s.
Under the leadership of Nathan Jones, Luton were able to push on to secure back-to-back promotions from League two to the Championship in the 2019-2020 season. The club’s return to the 2nd tier of English football had given the fans hope that a return to top flight football may be on the cards, and they are just one game away from doing it.
Coventry City FC
Coventry City or “The Sky Blues” were established in 1883 and throughout their history have experienced the highest of highs and some incredible lows. Under the management of John Sillett and George Curtis in the 80s and 90s, Coventry were able to win the FA Cup in the 86/87 season, beating Tottenham Hotspur.
As well as winning the FA Cup, Coventry City enjoyed a full decade in the newly formed Premier League before being relegated in the 00/01 season. They have struggled to relive the success of the past since, flitting between the Championship and League one. They finally have the chance to reach the Premier League again and will want to make the most of the opportunity.
The Playoff Semi-Finals
Luton Town
Luton Town finished 3rd in the table from the overall season and were pitched against 6th place Sunderland. In the first leg, Luton would go into the lead away from home with a goal from Elijah Adebayo. Unfortunately for them, the lead wouldn’t last. In the 39th minute, Sunderland equalised through Amad Diallo and later took the lead with a goal from Trai Hume. The meant Luton had it all to do in the 2nd leg, but would have home advantage. In similar fashion, Luton would take an early lead. In the 10th minute, Gabriel Osho would make the tie level at 2-2 on aggregate. It would take until the 43rd minute for Luton to go into the lead with a goal scored by Tom Lockyer. Luton Town would go through to the Championship Playoffs Final at Wembley with a 3-2 win over Sunderland.
Coventry City
Coventry would have a seemingly much more difficult task in their playoff semi-final. They were able to finish 5th in the league, meaning they would face 4th place Middlesbrough, who they had played in the final game of the season. The first leg would end in a goalless draw at home, meaning they would have to travel to Middlesbrough and win the game. They did just that! A goal in the 57th minute from Gustavo Hamer sent Coventry to Wembley.
After a long and grueling season for both sides, it comes down to just one game the Championship Playoffs Final. Luton and Coventry will be playing for a huge prize, to be able to play along side football’s elite clubs. Each club has made their way from lower leagues to have a chance of playing in the Premier League and it looks like it will be an exciting game, with everything put on the line.
