The Kop: A Legendary Stand

The Kop is a single-tier structure located opposite the Anfield Road End of the stadium and is one of the most famous stands in football. Its origins date back to 1906 when Liverpool won their second league title. The stand was built in recognition of the dedicated Liverpool fans that turned up to watch the team. The stand was capable of accommodating 25,000 supporters, which was all standing at the time. The name “Kop” came from a hill in South Africa, Spion Kop, where a battle during the Boer War resulted in the loss of many lives, including soldiers from Liverpool.

The Kop became well-known for the spontaneous signing of the fans and during the 60s, the emergence of the famous band The Beatles only added to the incredible atmosphere of the stand and ground as a whole. However, following the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989, the Taylor Report led to the conversion of standing terraces into all-seater stands. Today, with a capacity of nearly 13,000, the Kop remains the focal point of Anfield.

Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand: A Tribute to an Anfield Legend

The Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand is a two-tiered structure honouring the legendary former player and manager, Sir Kenny Dalglish. Originally known as the Centenary Stand, it underwent significant restorations as part of the Taylor Report recommendations. In 2017, the stand was renamed after Dalglish during the 125th anniversary of Liverpool Football Club. The capacity of the stand sits at 12,000 and the is not only a tribute to an immense footballing icon but a testament to what Sir Kenny Dalglish means to the city of Liverpool and the football club.

At a cost of £80m, the recent expansion plans to further enhance its capacity to over 15,000. The Main Stand: Progress of Anfield

Newly built and opened in 2016, the Main Stand represents the newest addition to Anfield’s historic structure. Originally the oldest stand at the stadium, the Main Stand went through a major facelift, adding three tiers and 8,500 seats, at a cost of approximately £110 million. At the time, the expansion increased the capacity of the stadium to just over 54,000. The stand is home to the famous Anfield tunnel, dressing rooms, director’s box and press box.
