Description
Stamford Bridge has been the home of Chelsea Football Club since 1905 and was opened as a sporting arena on 28th April 1877. Initially, the stadium was offered to Fulham FC who refused the chance, the stadium went instead to a brand new side, Chelsea Football Club. The stadium was a quick success, hosting a crowd of 60,000 in the first year, with Chelsea being promoted after 2 and three FA cup finals being held there in 1920, ’21 and ’22. Other stands would be erected in the stadium throughout the years, notably The Shed in the 1930s and the West and East stands in the 60s and 70s. A major redevelopment would take place in the 90s with the need for grounds in England to be all-seater stadiums. Each stand in the ground would go through a huge change, adding seats and it would finally be fully completed for the start of the 2001/2002 campaign. The current capacity is around 40,000 with all four sides close to the pitch. There has also been additions of hotels, restaurants and conference rooms added to the facility.

Chelsea 22/23
Chelsea have recently changed owners with American Todd Boehly taking the reigns and the incoming Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, taking over from club legend Frank Lampard. The club made many signings last season, leading to them having of the biggest squads in the Premier League. Unfortunately, Chelsea finished 12th in the league, missing out on any European competition for 23/24.

History of Chelsea FC
Chelsea were founded in 1905 by a man called Gus Mears, who had originally bought Stamford Bridge Athletics Stadium with the dram of transforming it into a football ground. Chelsea would be the club to move into the ground and it quickly became a hit in the capital, with Chelsea establishing themselves as the biggest club in the capital. They were the first club to sign the first non-British player, the Danish Nils Middelboe who arrived at the club in 1913. The early history of Chelsea was not the most successful, as they spent their team moving between Division 1 and 2.

It would take until 1955 for Chelsea to win their first league title and it would be shortly after that the club would enter a period of relative success. They won their first League Cup in 1965 and then their first FA Cup in 1970 and Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971. The club would then go through a time of uncertainty, with them ending up in near bankruptcy due to the rising costs of the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge. Chelsea would eventually be sold to Ken Bates in 1982 for a grand total of £1.

In 1996, the club would again return to a period of success with Dutch legend Ruud Gullit at the helm. Although they would not go on to win a Premier League during this time, they had some success in cup competitions, lifting the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000, a League Cup in 1998 and their second Cup Winners’ Cup in the same year. It was during this time that in 1999, Chelsea were the first club to field a full 11 players from overseas in the Premier League.

2003 would see one of the biggest changes in the club’s history come to pass. Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovic bought the club, clearing Chelsea’s debts and investing heavily in the team. It wouldn’t be long before the arrival of Jose Mourinho who would lead Chelsea to a plethora of trophies, including back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. It is now the Todd Boehly era at Stamford Bridge who has already made his mark on the club, bringing in a total of 8 players in January 2023.

Legends
There are many Chelsea players to have played in the shirt that could be considered legends. There are players in the modern era, such as John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba that will go down in the club’s history as being part of the most successful era in Chelsea history. There are other players, like Peter Osgood who scored in both legs of the European Cup Winner’s Cup against Real Madrid and Gianfanco Zola led the team to six trophies, including two FA Cups.
