Randox Grand National Returns to Aintree Next Week!

The wait is almost over as the world-famous Grand National returns to Aintree Racecourse next week, with the 2026 Randox Grand National festival set to take place from Thursday 9th to Saturday 11th April.

What’s New for 2026?

This year brings some important updates that fans and attendees should be aware of:

Earlier final declarations: For the first time, the race will operate on a 72-hour declaration system, meaning the final field will be confirmed on Wednesday 8th April—earlier than ever before.
Maximum field remains at 34 runners, following recent safety-led changes
Six reserve horses will now be available, increasing flexibility in the final line-up
Race day schedule tweak: The first race on Grand National Day will start earlier at 12:45pm, while the main event retains its 4:00pm slot

These changes are designed to improve clarity for fans, connections, and broadcasters, while continuing to prioritise safety and race quality.

Initial Entries

As of now, the 2026 race has attracted 78 initial entries, a noticeable drop from previous years but a sign of a more competitive and selective field.

Irish trainers once again dominate the entries, making up roughly 63% of the field, with powerhouse stables like Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott leading the charge.

Early attention is already building around key contenders, including:

Nick Rockett – the defending champion
I Am Maximus – a recent winner returning for another shot
Iroko – among the early favourites following strong recent form

Three Days of Racing and Style

The Grand National Festival is about far more than just one race. Across three days, Aintree will once again deliver a unique blend of elite sport and social occasion:

Opening Day (Thursday 9th April) – high-quality Grade 1 racing kicks things off
Ladies Day (Friday 10th April) – a standout mix of fashion, entertainment, and racing
